Record high waters in the Black River Watershed drove waters up and over the emergency spillway scouring out an enormous canyon-like ditch exposing a pre-regulation historical trash pit. The League of Watershed Guardians (LoWG) will be working alongside the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) to eradicate this massive amount of trash that has unfurled across many river miles,
Over the spillway and through the woods after the trash we go!
Help us magically transform the Lower Black River back to the way it should be! Formal black attire suggested but not required.
Free camping will be offered Thursday, October 12 through Tuesday, October 17, and a volunteer appreciation dinner is planned for the evening of Saturday, October 14.
This spring, floodwaters over-topped Clearwater Dam and scoured a 50-70 foot deep gorge through a pre-regulation landfill in the floodplain releasing trash into the Black River. The majority of all dated trash picked up by this massive force of water ranges from the early 1970s to early 1980s. The trash deposition zone starts at water’s edge downstream for five miles.
THIS CLEANUP IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART AND IS RESTRICTED TO VOLUNTEERS AGE 14 AND UP.
